Head Start is a federally funded program for preschool children from low income families, living in the school district boundaries of Allen, Crandall, Denison, Ennis, Farmersville, Forney, Frisco, Gunter, Kemp, Mabank, McKinney, Midlothian, Palmer, Pottsboro, Rockwall, Royse City, Sherman, Waxahachie, Whitesboro, and Wylie. This comprehensive early childhood program provides services in education, health, social services, nutrition, mental health, and parent involvement. Primary eligibility is based on income and age of the child.

Who is Eligible?

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply
Primary eligibility for prospective Head Start students: 1. The family's income must fall within the federal poverty income guidelines.2. The child must meet district age eligibility requirements. (Some districts also serve 3 year old students.)3. The child must live within school district boundaries (with the exception of students meeting the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act) Head Start also accepts over-income students with disabilities based on Head Start and school district criteria. Primary eligibility for prospective Early Head Start students: 1. The family's income must fall within the federal poverty income guidelines.2. The child must meet district age eligibility requirements (must be birth to three years of age).3. The child must live within the school district boundaries of Sherman ISD, McKinney ISD, and Rockwall ISD (with the exception of students meeting the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act).4.
