Federally-funded head start programs help prepare young children from low-income families, ages birth to five
years old, and their parents for the social and educational challenges that young children face as they
develop. Each head start program focuses on providing comprehensive services designed to enhance a child's
emotional, social, cultural, language, reading, mathematics, science, health and nutrition education.

In 1996 CPLC was chosen to be the Arizona Migrant and Seasonal Head Start grantee. With a 2 million dollar budget, 301 funded slots, and 4 sites, CPLC began the project with very little knowledge of Head Start and its intricacies. Nearly twelve years later, CPLC has increased its Head Start budget to over $11 million, more than doubled its funded slots to 752, and increased its capacity with five additional sites, and learned an immense amount about early child care and education along the way.
Head Start was created to help children from lowincome families prepare to enter kindergarten. For over 40 years Head Start grantees like Child-Parent Centers, Inc. have delivered quality education services that teach preschoolers and preschool age children with disabilities the literacy, math, science, art, and social skills necessary to succeed.
Project Head Start, launched as a summer program by the Office of Economic Opportunity in 1965, was designed to break the cycle of poverty by providing preschool children and their families with a program to meet their social, health, nutritional and psychological needs. Head Start is now a $7 billion dollar program that provides comprehensive services to low-income children from age three to the age of school attendance. A new program, Early Head Start, serving children from birth to three years was initiated in 1995. Head Start serves nearly 900,000 children and families nationwide, through a network of approximately 1,600 grantees
Booker T. Washington Child Development Center, Inc. is a non-profit federally funded comprehensive Head Start Program for 177 preschool children (including children with special needs) from low income families who live within the Booker T. Washington boundaries. There is no fee to participate. Students receive free meals through the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Child Nutrition Program. The program accepts children ages three to five years old. With a low child staff ratio, Our Head Start program conducts classes with 1 adult for every 10 children. All of our staff members receive on going training in child development and early childhood education and all of our Teaching Staff are either enrolled in or have obtained a Childhood Development Credential.
Head Start is a federally funded preschool program that respects the parent as their child's most important educator. Through parent participation, both child and parent will enrich their understanding and value of education. Head Start programs offer a multicultural program designed to meet each child's individual needs. In order to qualify for this free educational program, the child must meet the following guidelines:• Be 4 years old on or before August 31 of the current school year.• Live within the Washington Elementary School District boundaries.• Have a family income that meets Head Start federal income guidelines.The WESD Head Start programs are licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Office of Child Care Licensing. WESD Head Start is funded under contract with the City of Phoenix.
Head StartThe GPUL’s Head Start program is aimed at the intellectual, social, emotional and physical development of Valley children from ages 3 through 5. The Wilson Head Start Program will provide quality educational and comprehensive support services for preschool children and their families. In order to accomplish this goal, Wilson Head Start will partner with the Wilson School District, the Wilson Community, the City of Phoenix Grantee and other partnering agencies
A preschool for 3 and 4-year old children from low-income or at-risk families. Morning and afternoon are classes available. This program is free to families who meet federal income guidelines. Fully certified teaching staff. Nationally recognized SFA curriculum.
Golden Gate Community Center operates 14 Head Start classrooms. Geared for low-income families, this vital program prepares four-year olds and their parents to begin their academic lives.
Head Start is a Federal and State funded preschool program. The Deer Valley Unified School District offers Head Start at several elementary sites. There is no charge to eligible families.
