SHARON BAPTIST BOARD OF DIRECTORS was organized in the year 1969 and incorporated March 1987. July, 1969 Sharon Baptist Head Start was founded by the late Reverend George Criss and Easter Davenport. The staff of eight persons set up operations to serve 60 children in the basement of Sharon Baptist Church on Forest Avenue, Bronx, New York. Head Start was founded as part of President Lyndon Johnson's "'War on Poverty," a federally-funded anti-poverty program initiated in 1964.Board members include: Dr. Rufus Sadler, Ms. Isatu Kanu, Col. William Woods, Mrs. Marselle Heywood-Julian, Ms. Cherise Myers, Mrs. Frances Phipps and Mr. Julius P. Bennett.

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.
